Bringing our novel to life!

14th Jan 2025

Primary 6 had a day to remember today! Their WAU topic is ‘The Rainforest’ and their class novel is ‘The Explorer’ which is about 4 children who survive a plane crash, in the Amazon, and have to fend for themselves in order to survive. Mr Henry wanted to bring their learning to life so he called upon the expertise of our caretaker and leader of the Ballinascreen Scouts, Collwyn Brunton. Collwyn prepared and led the children in various survival skills, mimicking some of the challenges the children in the novel faced. The P6s learned how to create a shelter, how to filter water, how to light a fire, they practiced archery (should they ever need to use it in the wild) and they learned how to cook bacon on an open fire! The knowledge and skills developed by the P6 children today were superb. A massive thank you to Collwyn who certainly brought their learning to life and taught then many important survival skills, with many of the children stating ‘this is the best day ever!’ The photos speak for themselves. The sharpest shooters in archery were presented with archery medals. Thank you for these, Collwyn.
